Knicks, Nets Look to Change Trend of Slow Starts

With the way both New York MLB teams ended their seasons and with the current play of both New York NFL teams, it is imperative for sanity's sake both New York NBA teams get off to good starts when the regular season starts later this month.

While the first month of the NBA season may be short, it is an important few games to get off to a hot start. Historically, slow starts have been posted by both the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets. The Knicks are tied for 16th with Cleveland, both posting 14-17 records (.452). The Nets are even worse at No. 25 with a record of 13-21 (.382). For contrast, Milwaukee tops the list with a 22-9 record (.710), while Toronto and Utah tied for second with the most wins at 23-10 (.697).

NY sports betting apps list Boston and Milwaukee with the best NBA championship odds at +400. The Knicks are +5000, while the Nets are +10000.

Three of First Four on Road for Knicks

New York will open its season against hated Atlantic Division rival, the Boston Celtics at 7 p.m., Oct. 25 (ESPN) and two days later will begin a three-game road trip at Atlanta at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 27. A visit to New Orleans follows the next night at 7 p.m. and ends with a trip to Cleveland on Halloween Night at 7:30 p.m.

Boston holds a 3-1 record against New York in October since the 2017-18 season. New York has won their only October meeting against the Hawks on Oct. 17, 2018 (126-107 at home) and hold the same record over the Pelicans after a 123-117 road win on Oct. 30, 2021. The Cavs are 1-1 against the Knicks after a 121-108 home win on Oct. 30, 2022.

BetMGM New York lists the Knicks as a 1.5-point home underdog in the opener against Boston with a moneyline of +105.

Nets Hit the Road Early

Brooklyn opens its 2023-24 campaign at home versus the Cavaliers at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 25. A four-game road trip is up next, starting with a visit to Dallas at 8:30 p.m., Oct. 27 and Charlotte at 7 p.m., Oct. 30.

The Nets hold a 2-0 October record against the Cavs since the 2017-18 season. Brooklyn and Dallas have never met in October, and the Hornets are 1-0 against the Nets, having won a 11-95 road matchup on Oct. 24, 2021.
