The day after Belmont Park opens its 40-day spring/summer thoroughbred racing meet, New Yorkers will have an excuse to continue the party.

Why?

Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is a widely known and beloved holiday for many, but it is also National Chipotle Day, which is a celebration of the chipotle pepper.

This fruit is a mainstay in many Mexican dishes and is the namesake of one of the most popular fast-food chains in the U.S.  Whether you prefer authentic tacos or a more mainstream interpretation like a quesadilla or burrito, Chipotle has become a fast-food staple to get your Mexican food fix.

This writer’s favorite is the Chicken Burrito Bowl.

So, in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, let’s take a break from checking your favorite NY sportsbooks to see where New York stands on Chipotle restaurants.

EmpireStakes.com – your source for NY betting apps – used consumer data from ScrapeHero to determine how many Chipotle restaurants were in a state per 1 million people, as well as the percent share of restaurants in the United States.

We also used search data from Google Trends for “Chipotle near me” in the past 90 days to determine relative interest in the chain (score of 100 being the most, 0 the least). Each category was then weighted, and each state ranked accordingly.

Here is where the Empire State stands:

Where New York Finished

New York placed at No. 10 with a Google trends Search Volume of 36 (second lowest of the states listed), with 10.3 Chipotle restaurants per 1 million people. That is a 6% share of Chipotles in the nation. After celebrating the holiday, take a look at some NY sportsbook promos on the Knicks, Mets or Yankees.

Ohio heads the list with 19.7 Chipotle restaurants per 1M people. Maryland, Arizona, Florida and Illinois round out the top five, followed by Virginia, California, Texas and Pennsylvania.

As of March 31, Chipotle – which is based in Newport Beach, Calif. – has more than 3,200 restaurants in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. It claims to be the only restaurant company of its size that owns and operates all its restaurants.
